Prof. Dr. Zafer Taşlıklıoğlu was born in 1911 in Taşlık Village of Yenice Town of Xanthi District in Western Thrace, and received his primary education at the Greek primary school in Yenice between 1917-1923. Between 1923 and 1925, he attended the Greek Gymnasium, the Turkish Rüştiye and the Jewish Secondary School in Xanthi, and then enrolled in the “Mission Laique Française” French High School in Thessaloniki. He had to leave this boarding school in the 10th grade due to family reasons. In 1930, he enrolled in the Edirne School of Education and graduated in 1936 as a primary school teacher. In the 1936-1937 academic year, he started his higher education at the Classical Philology Department of the Ankara Faculty of Language and History-Geography. He graduated from this department in 1940. At the end of 1942, he obtained the title of “doctor” with his doctoral thesis titled “Anatolian Lycian Cults”. Between 1945 and 1952, he worked as a doctoral assistant at Istanbul University, Department of Classical Philology. On 15 December 1952, he was awarded the title of “associate professor” with his associate professorship thesis titled “Sources Related to the Cult of Apollo in Anatolia”. He published books and articles on epigraphy, historical geography and ancient religious beliefs. He published books and articles on epigraphy, historical geography and ancient religious beliefs. Between 1961 and 1962, he worked at Oxford University and the British Museum in England. On 5 May 1964, he received the title of “professor” with his presentation thesis titled “Epigraphical Researches in Thrace”. In 1980, he was appointed Head of the Department of Classical Philology. Prof. Dr. Zafer Taşlıklıoğlu, who held this position until January 1983 when he retired, passed away on 19 March 2009.

He was born on May 21, 1950, in Cebeci/Ankara, completed primary education at Barbaros Primary School (Beşiktaş/Istanbul), and middle and high school education at Özel Ata Koleji (Etiler-Beşiktaş/Istanbul). In 1971, he graduated from the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Arts with certificates in “Preparation”, “Prehistory”, “Ancient Near Eastern Cultures”, and “Basic Archaeology”, submitting his thesis titled “Lebedos Coins” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sabahat Atlan. He started his doctoral studies at the Archaeology Department of the Faculty of Arts at Istanbul University in 1972, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sabahat Atlan, and appointed as a “Research Assistant” to the Archaeology Department on May 25, 1974. In 1981, he graduated from the Department of Classical Languages and Literatures with certificates in “Ancient History”, “Latin Language and Literature”, “Ancient Near Eastern Languages”, and “Basic Ancient Greek Language and Literature”, submitting his thesis titled “The Place of Cybele Cult in Ancient Greek and Latin Literature” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zafer Taşlıklıoğlu. He enrolled in the Physical Geography Department of the Faculty of Arts in 1981 and graduated in 1985. In 1990, he was granted the title of “Doctor of Philosophy” (Ph.D.) in the Department of Archaeology and Art History with his dissertation titled “Necropolises of the City of Termessos” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Semavi Eyice. He was transferred to Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of History, Ancient History Division in 1990 and appointed as “Assistant Professor” at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Arts, Department of Classical Languages and Literatures, Ancient Greek Language and Literature Division in 1994. He was granted the title and authority of “Associate Professor” in the Department of Ancient History in 1997 and appointed as “Associate Professor” in the Department of Classical Languages and Literatures, Ancient Greek Language and Literature Division at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Arts in 1998. He was promoted to the rank of “Professor” in the Department of Ancient Greek Language and Literature on March 23, 2006. He worked until retirement due to age limit, offering various undergraduate courses and teaching postgraduate courses in the Department of Ancient Greek Language and Literature at Istanbul University’s Institute of Social Sciences. 

During undergraduate years, he participated in archaeological excavations as a student, including Tilmen Höyük Excavation (1969) led by Prof. Dr. U. Bahadır Alkım and archaeological excavations within the scope of the “Southeast Anatolia Prehistoric Research Joint Project of Istanbul and Chicago Universities” led by Prof. Dr. Halet Çambel and Prof. Dr. Robert Braidwood, including Çayönü and Giriki Hacıyan (1970). After graduation (1971), he participated in various excavations as an archaeologist or deputy director. Between 1989 and 1998, he conducted the “Termessos Ancient City and Sovereignty Area Epigraphy-Historical Geography Survey” with financial support from the Austrian Academy of Sciences Commission for Asia Minor on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Museums General Directorate and Istanbul University. Also, he participated as a permanent team member in the “Epigraphy-Historical Geography Surface Research Project in Eastern and Northeastern Lycia-Southwestern Pisidia” led by Prof. Dr. Bülent İplikçioğlu (Marmara University) with financial support from the Austrian Academy of Sciences Commission for Asia Minor and the Ministry of Culture and Museums General Directorate, until 2000. He alslo served as a guest researcher in the team’s activities in 2002. Since 2017, he has been honorary president of the Termessos Surface Research. She was born on 26.08.1955 in Istanbul. Due to her father's official duties, she completed her primary and secondary education in different cities of our country and graduated from Fatih High School in 1972-1973 academic year. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in Istanbul University, Department of Classical Philology in the same year. In June 1976, she graduated with a certificate in Greek Language and Literature, her main field of study. In the same year, on 20.12.1976, she was appointed as an assistant (today known as a research assistant) to the department she graduated from. She was awarded the title of “doctor” in the Department of Greek Language and Literature on 30.12.1982 with her thesis titled “Goddess Artemis and Cults in Antiquity” supervised by Prof. Dr. Zafer Taşlıklıoğlu. On 19.06.1987, she was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Greek Language and Literature, Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Literature, Istanbul University, and on 23.10.1991, she was appointed as an associate professor in the Department of Greek Language and Literature, and on 17.01.1992, she was appointed as an associate professor in the same department, and on 6 November 1997, she was appointed as a professor in the Department of Greek Language and Literature, Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures.

Prof. Dr. Güler Çelgin was appointed Head of the Department of Greek Language and Literature on 27.01.1999 and Head of the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures on 16.02.2010. As the Head of the Department, she took part in the Faculty Board. These duties continued until her retirement. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Literature for two terms between 28.06.2005-28.06.2011. In parallel with these duties at the Faculty, she served as the Head of the Department of Greek Language and Literature at Istanbul University Institute of Social Sciences since 1999 and as the Head of the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures since 2010. At the same time, as the Head of the Department, she was a member of the Board of the Institute of Social Sciences. She continued these duties until the date of her retirement. In addition to his administrative duties at the Faculty of Letters, Çelgin served as Vice Rector of Istanbul University between 29.09.2004-17.01.2005, Acting Dean of Istanbul University Faculty of Forestry between 02.11.2004-17.01.2005 and Acting Dean of Istanbul University Faculty of Letters between 24.11.2004-17.01.2005. Between 05.06.2006-04.06.2009, she served as Senator of the Faculty of Letters in the University Senate. She participated as a permanent team member in the “Termessos Ancient City and Sovereignty Area Epigraphy-Historical Geography Survey Project” conducted by Prof. Dr. A. Vedat Çelgin (Istanbul University) between 1989-1998, and in the “East and Northeast Lycia-Southwest Pisidia Epigraphy-Historical Geography Survey Project” conducted by Prof. Dr. Bülent İplikçioğlu (Marmara University) between 1990-1999.

On 26.08.2022, Prof. Dr. Güler Çelgin, who has been a full member of the Institute of Turkish Antiquities since 11.12.1991, retired from Istanbul University. Please click for her publications.
